Frequently asked questions.
What is a Fractional CMO?
A Fractional CMO is an experienced Chief Marketing Officer who joins your leadership team on a part-time basis. You get CMO-level strategy, leadership and commercial accountability without hiring another full-time executive. I step into the business to set direction, establish priorities, lead your marketing capability and connect marketing to pipeline, customers and revenue.
When should I hire a Fractional CMO?
Usually when the business has outgrown marketing execution without developing the executive leadership to match. You may already have marketers, agencies and plenty of activity, but nobody senior looking across the whole picture. Growth has stalled, priorities aren’t clear, teams are pulling in different directions or too many marketing decisions still land with the founder.
That’s the gap a Fractional CMO fills.
What’s the difference between a Fractional CMO and a marketing consultant?
A consultant typically advises on a defined problem or project. A Fractional CMO takes ongoing executive responsibility for the marketing function.
I don’t simply make recommendations and leave you to implement them. I work with your leadership team, make strategic decisions, establish priorities, lead the people doing the work and stay accountable for moving the business forward. Consultants advise. A Fractional CMO leads.
What’s the difference between a Fractional CMO and a marketing agency?
Agencies execute marketing. But somebody still needs to decide what marketing should do, where to focus and what is worth investing in.
As your Fractional CMO, I bring the strategic leadership, commercial focus and accountability to make those decisions with your executive team, lead internal and external marketing capability and own the growth outcomes. Your agency can do the work. I make sure it’s the right work.
Can you work with our existing marketing team or agency?
Absolutely. In many cases, that’s the point.
I work with your existing marketers, agencies and specialist partners to provide the strategic direction, priorities and executive leadership they need to perform at their best. You don’t necessarily need another marketing team. You need the right team doing the right work.
What size businesses do you typically work with?
Typically, established businesses between $1M and $30M in revenue, from smaller businesses preparing to scale to mid-sized companies navigating their next stage of growth.
Revenue isn’t a hard rule. Velo is most useful when you’re already doing marketing but the business has reached the point where execution needs stronger executive direction.
How quickly can a Fractional CMO make an impact?
You shouldn’t have to wait six months for your CMO to understand enough about the business to contribute. The first priority is understanding where the business is going, what’s getting in the way, what customers value and where marketing can have the greatest commercial impact.
From there, I establish priorities, align the people doing the work and start addressing the highest-value problems first. The goal isn’t more activity. It’s better decisions, faster.
How do you measure success?
Against the commercial outcomes we agree matter to the business.
Depending on the challenge, that might include customer acquisition, qualified pipeline, conversion, funnel velocity, win rates, marketing ROI, sales-cycle velocity, revenue or profitability. Success can also mean greater clarity, faster decisions, stronger alignment and a marketing team that knows exactly what it’s trying to accomplish. The measures change. The principle doesn’t: marketing should be accountable to commercial outcomes, not activity.
How much does a Fractional CMO cost?
Fractional executive leadership costs significantly less than employing another full-time executive while giving the business access to the same level of senior strategic expertise. Depending on the level of support required, a Fractional CMO can cost up to 70% less than a full-time CMO.
Velo engagements are designed around what the business needs, so we’ll establish the scope before discussing investment.
